Your curl type is determined by the chape of the follicle that your hair grows out of from yours scalp. The flatter or more oval-shaped the follicle, the curlier your hair; the more circular the cross-section, the straighter your hair.

The first hair type chart was originally started by hairstylist Andre Walker and modified later by the curly community.

The Curl Type Chart

A simple breakdown of hair types is: Type 1s are straight, Type 2s are wavy, Type 3s are curly, and Type 4s are coily.

Knowing your curl type

Knowing your curl type can give you a good base to get started on the products to use for your hair-care routine.

Generelly speaking, Type 2s like lighter products while Type 3s and 4 will like more moisturizing products.

Is it really important?

Although it can be a good start, you might have different hair types on your head and there also other factors that impact on your results such as – hair density, porosity, elasticity, environment, whether there is chemical damage, your styling techniques, just to name a few.

So our advice is experiment and try different products and techniques to learn what your hair really likes.
