We know you constantly hear about Porosity, but a lot of people in the Curly community don’t know what it means, so let’s go to a brief explanation.

Porosity refers to the ability of your hair strands to absorb and retain moisture and hydration. It can be classified as High Porosity, Medium/Normal Porosity, or Low Porosity.

If your porosity is high, it means that your hair strands absorb moisture fairly easily, however, that doesn’t mean it can hold it as well as other hair types.

High porosity can be inherited through genetics. However, often this high porosity can be caused by excessive heat usage during styling or aggressive chemical treatments. During these processes your cuticles can become badly damaged, which causes them to open and lift, causing larger gaps and thus increasing porosity.

But don’t worry, there are certain products and strategies you can use to protect your hair and maintain the right moisture.

Here is a guide with everything you need to know about high porosity hair and what to do to care for and protect it.

What are the Characteristics of Hair with High Porosity?

If your hair has a High Porosity, probably:

  • It is quite prone to frizz;
  • It always looks dry and dull;
  • Absorbs products very quickly;
  • Dries quite fast when left to dry naturally;
  • It tends to knot and break easily.

How Can You Take Care of Your Hair with High Porosity?

The main goal in a care routine for hair with high porosity is to reduce and reverse the damage done to the cuticles, causing them to close in order to retain moisture and hydration. To do this, you need to use products with appropriate ingredients to hydrate, nourish and repair, such as oils and butters.

Here are some tips for taking care of your hair:

  • Opt for conditioners with oils, these will coat your hair with a protective layer, helping to seal the cuticles.
  • Look for a Moisturizer that is light enough for daily use. As you know, hydration is a very important factor for your curls and it is important to try to maintain it, not only during washing but every day.
  • Invest in ‘Clean Beauty’ products, i.e. natural and organic ingredients. Contrary to these, controversial ingredients only harm your hair, especially if it is highly porous, since it will absorb them faster.
  • Invest in nourishing masks at least once a week. As we already talked about, hair with high porosity has a more open cuticle, and these masks will penetrate the hair deeper, providing it with the nutrients it needs to stay more hydrated and healthy.

Tips to let your hair grow healthier

Hair with high porosity is more prone to breakage, and if a proper care routine is not maintained, this can continue to happen, preventing your hair from growing. The following tips can help you avoid this breakage:

  • Try to minimize the use of heat during styling as much as possible. If you must use it, opt for a lower heat frequency and don’t forget to use a heat protectant on your curls;
  • Try, whenever possible, to wash your hair with cold water. Hot water will open the cuticles even more;
  • Use softer fibers to dry your hair, such as a cotton t-shirt. These fibers are softer and can help protect your curls;
  • Avoid products with ingredients such as silicones, sulfates, parabens, or sodium laureth sulfate. These ingredients strip oils from the hair, causing it to become dry.
