You’ve probably heard about detoxing your body, your mind, and even detoxing your house. But what about your hair, did you know that it too needs a detox?
The creator of the Curly Girl Method, Lorraine Massey, suggests that we should put aside all the products and techniques we normally use, and do a hair detox to give our scalp a reset.
What is a detox?
Just as the body detox serves to eliminate toxins and impurities, the hair detox removes all the products, chemicals, and environmental pollutants that build up over time in your hair and scalp. It’s a vital step towards healthy natural hair.
Lorraine Massey suggests that instead of using more products and treatments to try and repair the damage, it’s best to do a detox so that the hair can return to its most natural state.
A detox will help rebalance and nourish your scalp. It helps stimulate the hair follicles, which encourages growth, and removes the dandruff, acne, and itchiness you may have on your scalp.
During the detox, your hair may get a little more untamed and you may not enjoy it as much, but the end result will be worth it, and it’s also a good opportunity to learn to love your natural hair.
When should you detox your hair?
There comes a time when your hair will no longer react to the products, it will become volumeless, greasier, duller or prone to falling out, and your scalp may become more swollen, itchy or in some pain, and even when you clarify it you have the feeling that the products never fully come out. That’s when you should do a detox!
How to do a detox?
Look for products with ingredients like: Bentonite clay power (this powder is highly concentrated in minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and potassium. It will absorb and clean clogged pores, including heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals); Apple cider vinegar (it is rich in vitamins B and C and minerals for the hair. It is an anti-inflammatory and can help with dandruff); Aloe vera gel (contains proteolytic enzymes that help repair dead cells. It also helps prevent itching).
The products we suggest for you to do a detox are:
